This construction produces a compound sentence from two constituent sentences by applying the particle 'if': 'if p, q\ The sense of this familiar construction is not always clear.
These conditions determine, for each compound sentence, just what sequences satisfy it, given the same information regarding the atomic sentences.
That is, you could know what atomic sentences a sequence satisfies and yet have no way of deciding whether it satisfies a certain compound sentence.
Given what sequences satisfy the simple sentences, altogether, it is settled what sequences satisfy any compound sentence.
It is not for logic to settle what sequences satisfy the simple sentences, but rather, contingently on such information, to settle what compound sentences will be true or what sequences will satisfy them.
